Industrial design is an important part of Producer Service Industry. Theawarding mechanism of industrial design is an effective measure of industrial designdevelopment. Moreover, world economy powerful nations, such as Germany,U.S.A., Japan and so on have world-class industrial design award in order to evaluateand measure designing ability and technology philosophy of industrial products. Inrecent years, many industrial design awards have emerged in China. Besides, thenumber of awarded Chinese enterprises and design companies on internationalindustrial design awards are increasing year by year. Therefore, a research and inquiryof industrial design award is very important. This paper hereby attempts to discuss:(1)what value industrial design award can create to business;(2) how the currentsituation of industrial design awards in the domestic and overseas is, and whetherthere exists problems of the awarding mechanism of these industrial design awards.By means of a theoretical study, the research elaborates the definition ofindustrial design and the development of its meaning, what an award and awardingmechanism is, and the basic foundations of the awarding mechanism of industrialdesign. Besides, this study selects six representative well-known industrial designawards in the world: IDEA in the US, Red Dot and IF in Germany G-Mark in Japan,the Good Design in South Korean. and the Australian International Design Award. Itmainly elaborates on aspects like model of cooperation, the scale, settings, measuresof awarding, members of the jury, methods of judgment, comparison of awards, etc ofthe above-mentioned six awards. Then, by means of questionnaire surveying andinterviewing and selecting the enterprises and design companies which have woninternational and domestic famous awards as the respondents, the researchacknowledges the current wholly situation of Chinese Companies’ participating inindustrial awards in a quantitative way. And the research learns companies’psychology of participating, awarding, benefit and current problems of the awardingmechanism in the worldwide in a qualitative way. Lastly, the research presents my personal suggestions in the conclusion of the current situation and problems ofindustrial awarding mechanism in China. I expect this study can offer useful referenceand give some ideas to the relevant research and the organizers of industrial designawards.
