This paper mainly investigated whether the character-based teaching method orword-based teaching method suits for the word teaching. Based on the basicproblems in word teaching which we are confronted, this paper analyzed theprinciples of building character-based and word-based teaching method and theconnection between it and semantic transparency, especially in ontology andmethodology. Ultimately, the experiment’s result proved that character-based andword-based teaching method could coexist and complement each other. However,character-based teaching method considered to be even more effective, which moreeasily accessible for language learners. In the experiment, character-based andword-based teaching method, semantic transparency and test interval as independentvariable, test result as dependent variable. After the univariate analysis of generallinear model, which displayed that the score of those language learners who receivedcharacter-based teaching evidently higher than their counterpart, but the main effectof teaching method is not as well as we expected. Then, the simple effectsexamination is implemented to process data, which found the word-based teachingmethod is more effective for students to learn words with low semantic transparency.Overall, the way of “combination” is easily for language learners to process theirmemory elaborately and turn short-term memory into long-term memory. Meanwhile,it showed that word-based teaching method played an important role in wordteaching.The procedure of learning words is dynamic and ever-accelerated. Therefore,for TCSL teachers, to use which way based teaching method should be directedagainst specific conditions. For words teaching, the way of character-based teachingmethod as mainly approach, word-based teaching method as supplement have takenconsiderable result in the experiment which is also stimulated us to reexamine in this point of view in other fields which beyond word teaching, and that is a thornyproblem await us to solve in the future.
