Research On The Semantic Transparency Of The New Words Of The "X Family" In The Past Two Decades

It has been more than 20 years since the emergence of the phrase “X Zu”.As a highly productive word-formation model,linguists have analyzed and studied them from various perspectives.However,there is no research on the profound relationship between the diachronic development and the semantic transparency of “X Zu” from the perspective of semantic transparency,so this issue is worthy of our study.Taking 369 “X Zu” new words emerged from 1992 to 2016 as the object of study,based on the existing literature and data,and with the aid of quantitative statistics,this paper makes detailed statistics on the number,semantic content,syllables and transparency of the new word “X Zu”,and describes the synchronic and diachronic changes of “X Zu”,with the hope to reveal the relationship between the semantic transparency of the “X Zu” and its surface structure.Based on questionnaire survey,and the public's understanding on the semantic transparency of “X Zu”,this paper aims to reveal the differences between semantic transparency and public semantic transparency of “X Zu” dictionary interpretation and the reasons for the difference.This paper consists of the following chapters:The first chapter is the introduction on the general situation of the research of “X Zu”,the research situation of semantic transparency of words and phrases,and the significance,purpose,source and research method of this paper.The second chapter discusses the transparency of the lexicon meaning of the word “X Zu”.It is found that the lexicon meaning of the word “X Zu” is less transparent than that of the trisyllabic words in modern Chinese.The third chapter discusses there are internal and external factors that influence the semantic transparency of “X Zu”.The internal factors include the number of morphemes,the nomenclature motivation and the structure relationship;the external factors include social and cultural life,diachronic origin and scientific and technological development.The forth chapter mainly explores the differences between the semantic transparency of “X Zu” and the semantic transparency of the masses and the reasons.Through questionnaire investigation and data analysis,the semantic transparency of the masses is higher than that of the lexical meaning,and the semantic transparency of the masses is higher than that of the lexicon meaning.However,the semantic transparency of “X Zu” by foreign students is about the same as the semantic transparency of dictionaries,but there are differences in internal division and understanding.Through analysis,this paper finds that the reasons that affect the transparency of the “X Zu” are cognitive angle,word frequency and other reasons.
