Character is a symbolic system used to record language.As the most used and the oldest developed character in the world,the influence of Chinese characters on world culture is increasing day by day.The phonetic character is the main body of Chinese characters and the main research object in the field of Chinese character cognition.Modern Chinese characters define pictophonetic characters as compound characters composed of two parts: side and side.It also provides semantic information for phonetic recognition,and it can also be called phonetic symbol,which provides pronunciation clues for phonetic recognition.As the construction parts of pictophonetic characters,their functional attributes have different effects on the recognition of pictophonetic characters.The shape side is the distinct embodiment of the uniqueness of Chinese characters,and has two attributes: position and function.Although some studies have investigated the interaction between the position and function of the side of the form and other factors from the level of the subword,the interaction between the position and the function of the side of the form is still lacking.Combined with eye movement tracking technology and event-related potential technology(ERPs),this study integrates the position and functional attributes of the side by using the same experimental task,that is,semantic correlation judgment task.The effects of different positions and semantic transparency on semantic activation of pictophonetic characters were systematically explored from spatial and temporal perspectives.The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of its own attributes on the semantic activation of pictophonetic characters,to clarify the subword processing mechanism of pictophonetic character recognition,and to further deepen the study of Chinese character recognition.Experiment 1 uses eye movement tracking technology to explore the cognitive processing rules of semantic activation of pictophonetic characters in space,and experiment 2 uses event-related potential(ERPs)technology to explore the cognitive processing time of semantic activation of pictophonetic characters in time.The results of experiment 1 showed that the correct rate was higher,the response time was shorter,the average fixation time was longer,and the transparent phonetic characters were shorter,the correct rate was higher and the fixation times were less.Experimental results show that there is a significant interaction between semantic transparency and side position.semantic opaque pictographs induce smaller P200 amplitudes when the paragon position is on the left compared to semantic transparent pictographs.semantic opaque pictographs induce larger N400 amplitudes when the sides are located at the top,at the bottom and at the left compared to semantic transparent pictographs.The results of this study show that there is a side-by-side position effect in the process of identifying pictophonetic characters: the side-by-side position is easier to recognize than the side-by-side position is lower and right-hand pictophonetic characters,and the semantic transparency effect appears in the process of identifying pictophonetic characters: semantic transparent pictophonetic characters are easier to recognize than semantic opaque pictophonetic characters.In a word,the position and function of the side have dynamic interaction in the processing of pictophonetic characters,which makes it play an extremely important role in the recognition of Chinese characters.
