Chinese idioms are an important constituent part of modern Chinese vocabulary. They are the essence of the Chinese language because they are elegant, implicit, vivid and pointed. For foreign learners, whether they can use the Chinese idioms accurately is one of the signs of whether their Chinese is fluent. In TCFL, the students know little about the Chinese idioms and have few choices to use them in the initial stage of learning Chinese. However, in the middle and advanced stages, learning Chinese idioms is an important object. Teaching Chinese idioms scientifically and effectively can help foreign students understand and master the Chinese idioms correctly, stimulate their interest of leaning Chinese, enrich their language and culture knowledge, deepen their understanding of Chinese culture and improve their expression ability and communicative ability in Chinese. In the process of TCFL, the study on the teaching of Chinese idioms is scarce. Which idioms should be taught and which idioms needn’t be taught are not clearly defined. There are no detailed descriptions on the requirements of learning Chinese idioms in different teaching stages. An instructional, viable and systemic theory system for teaching Chinese idioms hasn’t been formed. Therefore, under the help of corpus and reference books, the author of the thesis aims to analyze the semantic transparency of Chinese idioms according to "whether the morpheme meanings are commonly used" and "whether the whole meaning is equal to the addition of the literal meanings", make different idioms acquisition levels and make a grade table for Chinese idioms, hoping to teach Chinese idioms from the easier to the more advanced, master Chinese idioms gradually, improve their understanding of opaque idioms by explaining the morpheme meanings and improve the effectiveness of idioms teaching.
