BackgroundThe problem about social adaptability of college students has been appearing along with the social development, which is getting worse and causing a series of social maladjustment problem. Among them, the phenomenon of college students’ employment difficulty which is caused by the expansion of colleges is one of the social adaptation problems. And what is more, the modern popular internet words, such as "weaning","the need group","strawberry generation","marry upon graduation","moonlight clan","LOHAS","no marriage" etc, describe vividly the lack of social adaptability of college students. The students’social adaptability refers not only to a person’s social adaptability, but it also refers to a group’s social adaptation. College students are the future of the motherland and the backbone of social development. Whether college students have strong social adaptability or not, not only relating to the personal survival and development, the family happiness and harmony, but also relating to social stability and harmony even to the country’s prosperity. Therefore social adaptability of college students is a social problem. It’s necessary for the government, educational institutions, human resources, social security and other relevant departments to join together to participate in, support and solve the problem. Vocational college students are a special group of college students, and private vocational college students is a relatively vulnerable group. We should pay more attention to their social adaptability.ObjectivesThrough the investigation of status of two vocational college students’social adaptability in Jinan, to compare the differences between college students from private and public higher vocational college in social adaptability. To understand the factors which affect the vocational college students’social adaptability. To urge the private and public higher colleges to learn from each other, promote vocational college students’ comprehensive quality and ability and improve the quality and level of education, provide a theoretical basis for the further promotion of the scientific development of higher vocational education in China.MethodsQuestionnaire survey method and stratified cluster sampling method were used for the research. Each group of200students were randomly selected from three professionals of oral medicine, clinical medicine and nursing in Shandong Medical College and Shandong Liming Polytechnic Vocational College,including1200questionnaires were distributed. Questionnaire survey was conducted using self-made general questionnaire and the diagnostic scale written by Professor Zheng Richang. Then Statistical description and analysis were carried on through the Microsoft Excel2007database and SPSS19.0statistical software.Main Results1. The result showed that both public and private college students’social adaptability were at a low level. The average score of public vocational college students’ social adaptability was8.77±11.74points and the average score of private vocational college students’social adaptability was7.1.7±13.43points. Social adaptability of public vocational college students was better than private vocational college students’. Social adaptability of public vocational college students’was better than private vocational college students’.2. The average score of students with extrovert character was12.27±12.79points, students with both extrovert and introvert characters was7.57+12.21points, students with introvert was3.13±12.27points. Social adaptability of students with both extrovert and introvert characters from public vocational college was obviously higher than those from private college.3. The average score of one-child students was8.79±13.09points while the non one-child students was7.60±12.50points. Social adaptability of non one-child students from public vocational college was obviously higher than those from private college.4. The social adaptability of college students with good academic records was stronger than college students with usual and bad academic records(P<0.05,P<0.01). The social adaptability of college students with healthy physical and psychological status was stronger than those with general and poor health physical and psychological status.Conclusions and Recommendations1. Generally speaking, the social adaptability of higher vocational college students was at a low level. Further more, the social adaptability of college students’from private vocational colleges is lower than those from public higher colleges. It is suggested that the state government should pay more attention to foucs on the development of higher vocational education from legal and policy, especially to vigorously support the development of the private higher vocational education.2. College students’ social adaptability and learning achievement had significant positive correlation.Students in higher vocational colleges were generally having difficulties in learning. In order to solve this problem, it is suggested to improve the teaching level of teachers, strengthen the cultivation of learning ability of college students.3. College students’ physical health, mental health and social adaptability had significant positive correlation.College students’ personality and social adaptability had positive correlation. It is recommend to strengthen the psychological health education of college students in higher vocational colleges and encourage the students to participate in physical exercise and social activities.
