Objectives:The aim of research was to investigate nursing students’(secondary schoolnursing students’,college nursing students’ and undergraduate nursing students’)attitudes,knowledge and work preference toward the elderly and to analyze it’sinfluencing factors.The purpose lies in making suggestion to improve students’attitudes and kownledge toward older people.The survey results were provided forthe educators to take corresponding teaching measures in geriatric nusing education.Methods:The study used cluster sampling method to choose774nursing students whichin three levels of4schools in changchun city were erolled.The study appliedquestionnaires including Survey of Demographic Information, Kogan’s Old Person’sScale (KAOP),Palmore’s Facts of Aging Quiz(FAQ) to investigate nursing studentswhich in different levels.Nuring student’attitudes were assessed using KAOP andnuring students’knowledge was measured using Palmore’s Facts of AgingQuiz(FAQ). The data were entered by EpiData3.1software and the data analyseswere performed using SPSS17.0software.Results:1.The survey selected800nursing students including secondary schoolstudents,college students and undergraduates as samples. Finally,a total of774nursing students completed questionnaires with a response rate of96.75%.2.Nursing students had light positive attitude toward older people.The score ofKAOP scale of nursing students were ranged from88to201and the mean score was151.30(16.91).The lowest and the highest score of KAOP positive scale was37 and110,respectively.The mean score of KAOP positive scale was77.58(10.80).3.Nursing students had low knowledge about aging.The score of FAQ1scale ofnusing students were ranged from2to21and the mean score was11.82(3.19).Thenumber of people pass the FAQ1was169and the pass rate was21.83%.4.There were significant differences in nursing students’ knowledge andattitudes based on education,gender,grade,homplace,be brought up by older peopleor not,to paticipate in activities about older people or not,noviciate ornot,respectively.5.According to the stepwise multiple regression analysis, nursing students’attitude was influenced by education,be brought up by older people or not,gender.Nursing students’knowledge was influenced by education, grade, homeplace,be brought up by older people or not.6.The result of intention to work with older people showed that:the number ofpeople who like to work with older people was589(76.1%) and the number ofpeople who dislike to work with older people was185(23.9%).7.Intention to work with older people as a factor influence nursing students’attitudes and knowledge toward older people.Intention to work with older people hada strong and positive relationship to attitudes and knowledge.The intention to workwith older people more strongly,the attitudes more positive and had higerknowledge.Conclusion:1.Nursing students had light positive attitude toward older people and their passrate of FAQ1scale was low.More than50%of nursing students would like to workwith older people.2.Education,grade,homeplace,to paticipate in activities about older people ornot were major factors to influence the score of KAOP scale and FAQ1scale.3.Intention to work with older people as a factor influence nursing students’attitudes and knowledge toward older people.
