Objective:To know and investigate oral health knowledge and behaviors amongFreshmen of Medical college,to provide basis for how to make oral health educationin college students.Methods: Reading " the third national oral health epidemiological investigation report", a self-designed questionnaire according to the report,1100freshmen of AnhuiMedical College were enrolled in our study. The questionnaires were collected on thespot, received a total of1051valid questionnaires. The questionnaire included:(1) Basicinformation about investigators: such as age, grade, monthly living expenses, culturaldegree of parents;(2) Oral health habits: including brushing, brushing time, brushingway,the toothpaste and toothbrush, use dental floss;(3) Oral health knowledge:including the recognition of caries and Periodontal diseases;(4) Oral beauty knowledgecognition;(5) Study on health care seeking behavior of oral diseases;(6) How to getOral health knowledge. Data were analyzed using SPSS13.0statistical software,andchi-square test was used to test significance. Values of p lower than0.05wereconsidered statistically significant.Results:(1The basic data: In this study,a total of1100questionnaires were issued, theywere the freshman. Among these questionnaires,1051were completely finished bystudents,and were considered valid and used for further statistical analysis. Theage of these1051students ranged between17to19years, with an average age of18.2years. Among these students,271(25.8%)were male,and780(74.2%)werefemale. 2Oral health cognition and behavior status about1051college students in AnhuiMedical College:73.9%f the students brush teeth more than2every day,75%of thestudents replace the toothbrush in3months,66.1%of the students use soft toothbrush,10.1%of the students can reach3minutes when brushing,31.3%of the students oftenclean the tongue during brushing. Only20.1%knew " plaque ",66%knew that the maincause of the dental caries was bacteria,42.7%of the students knew that the fluoridetoothpaste can prevent caries,16%of the students knew a sealant to caries,25.5%of thestudents knew the dental caries has been listed as one of the three major diseases thatendanger human,61.3%of the students knew the gingival bleeding is abnormal,15%ofthe students knew the scaling can prevent and treatment the gingival bleeding,58%of thestudents knew the difference between Oral scaling and brushing,61.3%of the studentsknew that smoking is harmful to oral cavity. Who can do regular oral examinationaccounted for only1.1%.51.9%of the students knew some knowledge of oralbeauty,92.9%of the students expect their teeth can be healthy and beautiful,with anaverage of28.8%of the students had psychological distress because of dentalproblems.55.3%of students considered the orthodontic treatment.(3Female students have more oral health knowledge and show better oral healthBehavior when compared with male students. Whose parents’ cultural degree is higherare better than low level, economic level determines the students’ choice of the methodsof oral health care and medical behavior to a certain extent.Conclusion: There are differences in students of different characteristics of the oralhealth cognition and behavior, needs to be targeted to the development of oral healtheducation program, strengthen the oral health education for college students,improve their oral health awareness, standardize oral health behavior, promote theuniversity students oral health improvement.
