Objectives1. Investigate the pain’s cognition and influencing factors of junior nurses from tophospitals in Xi’an.2. Design a pain management training program for junior nurses according to theircharacteristics.3. Evaluate the effects of pain management training on junior nurses’ knowledge, attitudeand behavior regarding pain, to provide basis for hospitals to develop junior nurses’ability about pain management, and improve the quality of pain nursing care.Methods1. Investigate the pain cognition for junior nurses from three top hospitals in Xi’an by thequestionnaire of Nurses’ Knowledge and Attitude Survey Regarding Pain(NKAS),which was translated into Chinese by Tong Yingge in2008.2. The questionnaire results were analyzed by SPSS17.0. Design a pain managementtraining program on the basis of features and requirements on pain knowledge ofjunior nurses, which was known by the survey results and interviews. 3. Evaluate the effects of pain management training on junior nurses’ knowledge andability about pain by quasi-experiment. The nurses were divided into experimentalgroup and control group, the nurses of experimental group received pain managementtraining for four weeks, containing twenty classes.4. Investigate the pain knowledge level of two groups of nurses before and after trainingrespectively using NKAS questionnaire. The nurses of experimental group filled in ascale of training teaching quality evaluation, which was used to evaluate the quality ofteaching. After training, the nurses of two groups cared patients suffering pain. Assessthe effects of pain management training on junior nurses’ behavior by evaluatingwhether they had used the assessment tools correctly, the contents they had recordedabout pain assessment, the patients’ pain degree and patients’ satisfaction for painmanagement.Results1. The average score was17.14±3.19, which revealed the junior nurses had a lack ofknowledge about pain management.2. There was significant difference in scores between different departments, the averagescore of nurses working in oncology department was highest, which was18.39±4.49.The average score of nurses working in internal medicine department was lowest, which was16.58±2.98. There was a significant difference in scores between nurseswho had received pain training and nurses who hadn’t received pain training. Thescores of different degree nurses were different significantly on pain assessment andaverage scores.3. The experimental group nurses were satisfied with the training teaching quality. Aftertraining, the nurses of experimental group scored an average of29.20on the NKASquestionnaire test, which is higher than that the nurses of control group scored anaverage of17.00, the difference is significant statistically(t=-15.625, P<0.01). Thecontents that nurses of experimental group assessed were more sufficient and moreaccurate. The rate of using assessment tools accurately of experimental group nurseswas100%, which was higher than that of control group nurses. The nurses of experimental group can teach the patient more accurately and abundantly. The patientstrusted the nurses of experimental nurses much more than the nurses of control nurses,Z=-2.684,P<0.05. The level of pain wasn’t different significantly between twogroups. The satisfaction level of patients for experimental nurses was higher, there wassignificant difference between two groups.Conclusions1The lack of pain knowledge of junior nurses working in top hospitals in Xi’an has hadan effect on the pain nursing care, the junior nurses should receive pain continuingeducation to improve their knowledge and ability.2Hospitals conduct standardized training on pain management according to thecharacteristics of junior nurses could improve the nurses’ pain knowledge, the abilityof pain assessment and health education, so as to make the quality of pain nursing caremuch better. The design of pain management training aimed at junior nurses ispracticable and feasible to some extent, which can be extended used in painmanagement continuing education in top hospitals.
