With the rapid development of modern industry and increasingly frequent renewal ofproducts, market competition is becoming more and more intense, which means enterpriseshas to ensure the quality of the product design and the increase in product variety as well as toshorten the time to market, reduce the designing and manufacturing cost of the products. Thismakes the application of the rapid design technology become one of the effective methods toimprove product design efficiency. The modularization technology combined withparameterization technology is an effective means of rapid design.In this paper, the bridge crane of Henan Weihua Group has been taken as the object ofstudy. Modularization and parameterization design based on the needs of users and thestructural characteristics of the bridge crane was conducted. Targeted to improve efficiency ofproduct design and the product competitiveness, bridge crane whole machine rapid designsystem was established and the rapid design of the bridge crane from component to assemblyunit to whole machine was completed. The main contents of this paper are:(1) The background and significance of the research has been presented by making briefintroduction of the current situation and development characteristics of bridge crane at homeand abroad, and the research on rapid design.(2) Theory of rapid design was described in this paper as well as the design method ofmodularization and parameterization.Possibility of the combination of modularizationtechnology and parameterization technology in theory was analyzed which provided theoretical basis for the implementation of bridge crane rapid design in next step.(3) The key technology of rapid design system of bridge crane was studied, including themodularization technology,parameterization technology, SolidEdge secondary developmenttechnology and database technology were introduced and emphasized. Modular partition ofbridge crane was made by building functional structure drawings based on the theory ofaxiomatic design. As for the bridge crane parameterization technology, the parametricmodeling technology, parameterized model drive technology, assembly technology ofcomponent models and assembly unit models.(4)The rapid design system of bridge crane was developed by using VB6.0asprogramming tool, Access as database, and conducting secondary development of SolidEdge.Detailed explanation of the development of the main function of the system had been made.The new product design process of “the new contract-parameter setting-componentchecking-model modular select and drive-automatic modular assembly-Wholeproduct”was conducted.
