Fire protection plays a key role in a country’s development, especially its socioeconomicdevelopment, as it is closely related to people’s life and social stability. Efforts to reinforcefire protection have become significant in recent years because disasters caused by fire haveput the society and many families under great pain and financial lost.Fire stations---the city infrastructure---are places where rescue and relief work isimplemented through extinguishing fire in the sphere of their jurisdiction. A scientificfunctional area layout of the fire stations plays a significant role in the fire fighters’ dailydrills and being on the scene in time. The functional area layout should be based on the following principles. First, it shouldmeet the requirements of rescue and relief work. Second, the passage through which thepolice will go on the job should be separated from other passages. Third, efficient policesending should be ensured through compact layout. Finally, policemen’s safety andenvironmental protection are also important. The objectives of the functional area layout are:a satisfying work flow, smooth traffic, efficient drill management, awareness of safety, fireprotection, good use of space and equipment, and provision of a cosy and safe environmentof life and work.Traditional methods of plant layout such as SLP graphical method and SLP analyticalmethod can be adopted in the functional area layout of fire stations. The rationale behindthese methods is to achieve a more realistic layout scheme by first analyzing the closerelations among the functional areas in consideration of the various factors on the layout andthen transforming the qualitative analysis into quantitative layout through a large number ofchart calculations.Sound equipment of the fire stations is the material security for fire fighting and rescuemission, thus scientific and rational facility equipping is of great importance in effectivelyimplementing fire fighting and rescue to reduce losses. There are a wide variety offire-fighting equipment and a reasonable choice is to be based on the law of fire development, the fire brigade’s time of arrival as well as effective fire control requirements.Based on an elaboration of background and significance of the functional area layout andits basic theories and methods, the author conducts an optimization research on the functional area layout of fire station Y by adopting SLP graphical method and gets an optimizedfunctional area layout plan. The equipment at fire station Y is optimized based on the “CityFire Station Construction Standards” in order to ensure the completion of fire fighting andrescue mission. This thesis provides practical guidance for the fire station construction.
