Research focused on developing modular Plant Factory Curtain Wall and its system in order to accomplish a new vegetables supply system by promoting productivity and saving resources. The vegetables and grains we eat today are cultivated on the ground by the principles our ancestors created hundreds or thousands years ago, however the quantity of vegetables which planted on the2D panel ground could not meet the growing needs of people worldwide with the problems of fast developing cities and population; Meanwhile, resources from both society and nature sides are growing increasingly tense, human-beings would face the unprecedented challenges from energy generating, city traffic and food security problems.Research investigated the latest Plant Factory technologies from both indoor and outdoor countries, analyzed practical and emotional effects which Plant Factory may bring with the fast urbanization problem, redefined the genes in designing future facilities and systems, in order to make the integrated technology with breakthroughs on aesthetical, feasible and energy-efficient aspects. At the first stage, a multi-disciplinary team of research students from MIT Media Lab collaborated to make the City Farm renovation project on the facade of fifth floor in MIT Media Lab. Then, based on the completion of first stage, research connected the experimental facilities with network and used the "City Scope" technology to monitor and stimulate the vegetables supply system aiming at Kendall Square in Boston, US. Finally, the research raised a innovative Plant Factory device design-Rollerponic, and a more flexible community-based system application.
