Modernization Progress Of City And Architecture In Ji’nan(1904-1945)

This paper selects Ji’nan, a important self opening trading port city as research object, original historical data and investigation results as basis, according to the three period:the Port Administration period (1904-1929), the City Hall period (1929-1937), the Puppet Government period (1937-1945), analyze the modernization progress of city and architecture in Ji’nan.Zhou Fu, the governor of Ji’nan, together with Yuan Shikai, the Beiyang minister applied Ji’nan as a self opening trading port city, and got the approval in1904. The commercial district was planned outside the old city district, which is the beginning of modernization progress of city and architecture in Jinan, the three essential factor, developed railway traffic, outstanding leaders, enough funds for construction ensure the orderly construction of commercial district. The development and construction of the commercial district, gradually formed the old district and commercial district developed together, which is a "dual core" pattern.Making the self opening trading port as the starting point and the power, Jinpu railway and Jiaoji railway intersection in Ji’nan formed the modern railway transportation system. The leader applied for the funding and misappropriated the silver stocks, which made Ji’nan won more than six hundred thousand of silver of construction funds, and the construction going smoothly.The Ji’nan city hall promulgated a number of regulations related to city construction and architecture, which made the city construction towards standardization and institutionalized in1929-1937. This period was the golden period of institution related to city construction and architecture in Ji’nan. Since then, the city construction of Ji’nan began modern city management legalization.The three period of Ji’nan’s modernization progress of city and architecture have different focus. The port administration period focused on the planning and construction of commercial district; the city hall period focused on the city municipal construction; the puppet government period focused on the planning of the southern new town and the road construction.The development of modern city did not synchronous with the development of the architecture activities. The city municipal construction was the most prosperous in the city hall period. However, the architecture activities was the most prosperous in the port administration period:a large number of buildings was built, which was also huge and important.In the city hall period, many new buildings still was built, but important ones obviously reduced. In the puppet government period, large-scale construction activities almost stopped.
