Nowadays with the implementation of quality-oriented education, library, withits unique educational form and irreplaceable role, has been gaining increasingimportance, which creates positive conditions for the construction and a rapiddevelopment of libraries in middles schools. Meanwhile, the present educationalmode in middle schools and its development trend make new demands on libraries.Libraries in middle schools are no longer a reference center, in which readingmaterials are merely gathered, organized and collected, but ought to be incorporatedinto the whole curriculum system as important curriculum resources and majorpositions in the implementation of quality-oriented education. Library constructionsin middle schools are achieving their gradual transition from traditional libraries withsingle function into multifunctional constructions, where various information,advisory service and places for study, research and communication are available tostudents and readers. In this regard, traditional library buildings cannot meet therequirements of readers in contemporary educational mode. For this reason, theeducation and architectural design field should focus more on providing students andreaders with open, independent, diverse places of learning and communication by wayof new architectural design, thus creating conditions for attaining edu cationalobjectives.In this context, this thesis investigates library constructions in middle schools.Through field research on middles school libraries built in different times in Chinaand analysis of outstanding practical examples in foreign countries and comparisonsof them, the thesis examines how educational mode in middle schools has influencedlibrary constructions. Furthermore, based on the present educational mode in middleschools together with its development trend and middle schools students’ andteachers’ behavioral, psychological requirements of architectural design and, inaddition, the result of a survey, the thesis comes to the conclusion that middle schoollibraries should have the characteristics of openness, digitalization, humanization andcomplex, dynamic development. In combination with relevant theories of educationalpsychology, behavioral psychology, spatial design, color psychology, ergonomics andenvironmental psychology etc., this thesis is aimed at constructing and proposing methodology of universal applicability for library constructions of middle schools inChina.
