In recent years, wireless sensor network is widely used because of its low development cost, low power consumption, convenient networking, etc. It is a kind of emerging technology that integrates sensor technology, communication technology, network technology and information processing technology. It performs a real-time monitoring and perception on site information through various types of micro-sensors of the terminal, and finally transmits these collected data to PC client through wireless method to realize the collection interactions between human and the site environment. This paper designs the monitoring system of the state of the brake shoe on railway site, and performs a real-time monitoring for the state of the brake shoe. The main research contents are as follows:(1) Investigate and research on the site management, the current situation and background of the brake shoe, and put forward the significance of applying wireless sensor network to the management system of the brake shoe. Then it has a further study on the origin and the research status of the wireless sensor network at home and abroad, and the technical characteristics and application prospect of ZigBee.(2) In order to accomplish a good theoretical preparation for the systematical design of hardware and software, this paper researches the equipment type, network topology and protocol stack code of the ZigBee wireless senor networks based on the system design requirements.(3) Considering the fact that the equipment is powered with battery and the inconvenience of battery replacement on site, this paper researches the energy saving method of each node and energy saving routing algorithm in wireless sensor networks, and improves the routing algorithm to meet the demand of a more balanced energy consumption of the network.(4) According to the system architecture and hardware design scheme of wireless sensor network, the paper selects the demanded circuit chip to complete the design of system hardware circuit.(5) On the basis of the types of the selected chip and the design of hardware circuit, and according to the functional demand of design system and different functions of each node, the paper designs the various hardware and software of the system. What’s more, in order to provide users with a good interactive interface, it designs the application platform for the PC software.This system will treat CC2530as the chip for the design of software and hardware of coordinator, router and terminal nodes, achieving the data collection and transmitting of the wireless sensor networks in the brake shoe monitoring system, and then send the data to PC through a serial port. Finally it achieves the purpose of having a real-time monitoring for the state of the railway brake shoe.
