With the rapid development of Chinese economy and technology, there exist new characteristics in construction projects, such as larger scale, longer cycle, bigger technical difficulties, many unknown, random and fuzzy factors in each stage of construction project management. With time going, all these would bring about risks that directly threat project objectives. The project objectives may not be achieved or not up to the expected effect. And it could lead to great loss. So we need to identify, evaluate risk factors, formulate appropriate countermeasures and implement follow-up tracing to control the impact of risk within the acceptable range. However, the traditional risk management model has lot of disadvantages, such as fragmented risk management method affects a series of lifecycle risk management activities, for example, risk identification, risk evaluation and risk countermeasure design. At the same time it also blocks the fast development of building industry. The invention of BIM (Building Information Modeling) provides new opportunities for the building industry and effective ways to realize the concept of Building Lifecycle Information Management (BLM). It is based on the3D digital model, which conveniently provides all kinds of information and knowledge sharing service for the whole process, from the planning, design stage and construction stage to the operational phase. Through it, transverse information loss and longitudinal communication barriers of different participants will be greatly eliminated in the project life cycle. And the obstacles in the construction building industry also could be broken down, so that the real-time data sharing, collaboration and communication of all parties involved in the various stages of a project are also very convenient. At the same time, BIM will improve the degree of integration in risk management to a great extent, and rapidly promote the concept of Building Lifecycle Information Management (BLM), so as to improve the efficiency of the whole lifecycle risk management, reduce risk possibilities, eliminate all kind of factors which may disturb the realization of project objectives, and finally bring benefits to construction enterprises. At present, BIM has not yet been used to solve project whole lifecycle risk management. The research of adopting BIM in the risk management based on the concept of BLM provides important practical reference value for the future construction project risk management. The framework of this study is as follows:In chapter One, the author advances research questions and the method to solve the problem. Through the introduction of the current development of the building industry, the shortcomings of traditional project risk management are analyzed. On the basis, the author advances BIM and the concept of BLM. He put forward to solve the existing problems of current construction project risk management by introducing BIM and the philosophy of whole lifecycle risk management. In chapter Two, concepts of BIM and BLM as well as their relationship are mainly illustrated. Firstly from the view of building industry informationization, the technology BIM and the concept BLM respectively are discussed in detail. It is concluded that the application of BIM is the prerequisite of realizing the concept BLM, on the other hand, the realization of BLM will demonstrate the value of BIM in construction projects to a maximum degree. In chapter Three, the feasibility of method to solving problems and advantages in practice through applying BIM and BLM are stated. Firstly through the analysis of the limitation of Chinese present project risk management model, the main problems are pointed out which interfere the process of construction project whole lifecycle risk management. Then the feasibility of whole lifecycle risk management with BIM is studied. In the next step, the practical application of BIM the process of whole lifecycle risk management is introduced and the unique value advantage is discovered. All these repeatedly confirm the application of BIM in the process of whole lifecycle risk management process is feasible. In chapter Five, the author concretely exemplifies each stage of whole lifecycle risk management and explores the achievements of whole lifecycle risk management based on BIM by discussing a practical project case.
