With socio-economic rapid development, the city has been expanded blindly, ecological environment has been damaged severely, and most cities have been in ecological overshoot. However, there is still no profound research on relation between ecological carrying capacity and urban spatial pattern. As one important method for the government to regulate and control coordinated and health development of ecology, society and economy, urban planning pay more attention to ecology, but it lacks effective way to reflect ecological concept through quantization method. This study is conducted for the purpose of deeply exploring great influence of urban ecological carrying capacity on urban development as well as conducting integrated study on ecological carrying capacity and space regulation and division based on discussion of basic theories of urban ecological carrying capacity.This thesis is based on principles and methods of ecological carrying capacity. In this thesis, ecological concept is integrated into space regulation and division, the method based on ecological carrying capacity is established for urban space regulation and division, and Huainan city, one emerging coal-mining city where ecological environment is greatly damaged, is taken as the entity for study. First, ecological footprint method is used to analyze characteristics of ecological carrying capacity of Huainan city; major factors influencing urban ecological carrying capacity are explored; space difference of urban ecological carrying capacity and evolution characteristics of urban ecological carrying capacity are analyzed, which is taken as the basis for control over ecological base of urban space regulation and division of Huainan city. Second, four major basic evaluation factors for space regulation and division are proposed, and they are natural factor, restriction factor, socio-economic factor and ecological carrying capacity factor; and the method for determining factor weight is defined. Third, GIS technology is used to analyze and study appropriateness of land development; and then modification is conducted in accordance with main road network and natural limit; finally, space regulation and division are completed.The research results indicate that ecological carrying capacity of Huainan city is in big deficit, and the deficit in districts and counties where coal is exploited, such as Fengtai county and Panji district, is bigger; therefore, ecological restoration in these districts and counties shall be strengthened. The area suitable for development in urban space regulation and division of Huainan city is used to project that the utmost scale of the center of Huainan city is1,473,000persons. Differences between space control and division of Huainan city based on ecological carrying capacity on the one hand and corresponding planning and strategies in general planning of Huainan city on the other hand are compared, which further provides basis for decision making on optimal allocation and differential management of land used for urban and rural construction projects and provides reference for study on ecological protection and space development of coal-mining cities.
