As a representative fine art journal in Shanghai in the1930s, Yishu Xunkan (the Ten-day Periodical on Art) witnessed and promoted the development of the Shanghai art community, particularly playing an non-negligible role in the metamorphosis and growth of the Juelan Society which was the first fine art group to advocate modern art. Besides, Yishu Xunkan made great contributions to disseminating western modern fine art and literary theories and exerted an enormous influence on the development of Chinese modern art., as a communication media, Particularly, it played a critical part in the eastward spread of western modernist fine art in the1930s. In fact, Yishu Xunkan was founded and published at the very moment when Chinese modern fine art was undergoing an important transformation. Yishu Xunkan raised a tide which had broken the two established patterns of impressionism and realism; however, it was seldom studied on by academic world. Furthermore, as a professional fine art journal, it got a new philosophy and innovative sense as well as flexible modes, which not only provided a referential mode for the establishment and development of modern fine art periodicals, but also served as a reference for the establishment of modern fine art periodicals to a certain degree.Referring to the Communication theories, this paper attempts to study the relationship between Yishu Xunkan and Juelan Society from multi-dimensional perspectives including Sociology, Art, etc. It discusses their profound relationship through analysis about Juelan Society’s profile and members as well as the articles published in Yishu Xunkan. Moreover, while analyzing its dissemination of Chinese and western art theories and culture, the paper demonstrates its characteristics including innovative sense and flexible modes, as well as the social repercussions it evoked, by using Text Analysis and some related transmission media theories to fully exploit both its superficial and deep value.
