The Swing Of Liberalism In Xinyue Magazine Between Its Politics And Literature

Xinyue is a monthly magazine published in the late20’s and early30’s of the20th century.Some liberalists such as Hushih,XuZhimo and LiangShiqiu jointly founded it.Although literature came to be its style at the first period.Since the second volume,some political eassays were published on it. So it became a magazine carrying both literal and political writings.We can find the literal and political views of these liberalists on this magazine.This paper will research the magazine from two sidesrits literal opinions and its political proposals.In literature,Xinyue exhibit its literal style and views by the literature productions,advertisements and review articles.They were conflicted with the Leftists in the literature communication acticities.Because Xinyue’s coteries insisted on the absolutely independence of the literature,they are totally different from the Leftists.This resulted in a debate between the two sides.The fundamentally different of class nature cause all these differences on many issues,such as the criteria of translation. The chapter one analyses the literature transmission of Xinyue and focus on the branching between its coteries and the Leftists.In politics,some coteries of Xinyue paid attention to the human right and deMocracy,which was conflict to the Kuomintang’s policy.Xinyue started to publish the political writing since its second issuein the second volume,which became the turning point of its style.In the process of its turning,some divergences also exited in the colleagues.After that,a part of the coterie constructed their public opinion and spread the constitutional thought.Their political views offended Kuomintang.As a result,some people got arrested and the magazine were confiscated sometime.However,they didn’t give up and try to convinced Kuomintang by arguments.So,until the forth volume,Xinyue kept publishing political writings and some colleagues expressed their political opinion,although few of them were adopt by the government.The liberalism didn’t lose its way in the dilemma.They still insisted on their belief and tried to take on a political reform.It means that they will against to the proletariat who are propose to revolution.And their proposal of reform also means they can only be remonstrators to the government.So,they gave a lot of reform advises and argue against to the point view of revolution.Although they didn’t play a practical role in the politics and caused Kuomintang’s counterattack on the contrary,they made constitutional thought more popular to some extent.Xinyue has recovered to the literature magazine since the forth volume.Its switch between literature and politics reflected the advance and retreat of liberalism. When it turns to politics,it reflexes the expand of liberalism.In contrast,the suspend of political articals means the deferment of liberalism.From the progress of liberalism in China,Xinyue has played a role that continue from the above and introduce the following.At this stage,liberalism was advanced to the "good government" in the early20’s because they paid more attention on the legal system and politician’s professional quality.Meanwhile, the dissemination of constitutional thought of this period laid the foundation for the later liberalism constitutional movement.So,Xinyue got a status on the history of liberalism with no suspect.This paper also explained why Xinyue wasn’t mentioned by the history of Journalism and discussed its importance.
