Design And Development Of The Institutional Repository (CAS-IR)

In order to improve the long-term preservation and management of knowledge as sets of institutes, and promote the dissemination and use of knowledge, the paper disc usses the design and development of the institutional repositories of Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS-IR), which is based on the research of the current knowledge output situation of the institutes in Chinese Academy of Sciences, as well as the needs for th e long-term preservation and assessment of knowledge-assets. Firstly, the logical archi tecture, functional architecture and environmental requirements of the system are disc ussed. Secondly, a data model, a metadata framework, a detailed function planning, cl asses of some main function modules and algorithm processes for CAS-IR are propos ed. Finally, summarizes the development status of CAS-IR, and maps the future work.The paper presents a technical model for building institutional repositories, whic h is based on the Patchwork Prototyping method. Functions, such as harvesting and p olymerizing data dynamically, knowledge organization, discovery, dissemination, audi ting and open interoperability, etc., are introduced. Some advanced technologies are d esigned and used in the system, including dynamic extending model for metadata sche ma, template organization and association of knowledge content objects, model of aut omatic multiple data mapping and aggregation, automatic subject indexing by SKOS, etc. Supporting extending knowledge content objects through non-programming mod e, multi-source data exchange and open integration.The system realizes capture, description, organization, packaging, preservation, d issemination and management of digital knowledge assets in research institutions. Th e construction of institutional repositories in our country, the open sharing of outputs f unded by public funds, as well as the development of network of open institutional rep ositories on national level are promoted by the system, which also forms some positiv e effects and affects to the society.
