With the high developing speed of computer aided design, computer simulation technology, assembly technique and visualization technique, virtual assembly applies to virtual reality technologies which focus on the vision of production assembly design become more and more widely used in industry field. As a kind of visual process documentation of virtual assembly animation, virtual assembly animation can express the complex structures of mechanical design and manufacturing process in a better way, it also aid designers to analyze and optimize the process of assembly. In order to realize the assembly animation faster and more flexible, the concept pattern of the shooting script in film field is introduced and combined with the virtual reality technology to propose a new method for virtual assembly.First, the information of production was pretreated for matching the virtual environment. Abstraction and transformation of the assembly information were obtained in the secondary development of Pro/Engineering by using Pro/toolkit. And the information transmission between well CAD system and virtual environment were established by facets transforming. This information pretreatment lay the foundation for the next step of shooting script modeling and assembly animation producing.Second, the shooting script modeling technique was introduced into virtual assembly field. The main structure of time and movement in assembly animation was built, and the elements of animation were detailed analyzed and defined. The concept model of assembly animation and its script information storage method also were given. An assembly animation system based on shooting script was developed through the platform of C#. The modeling technique mentioned above is an important base for script-driven virtual assembly animation.Third, an assembly animation driven technique was developed based on the shooting script model. Combined with the key techniques in virtual assembly system, such as skeletal animation driven, collision detection and interactive operations were expressed and then analyzed. And the function modules of virtual scene, automatic assembly animation and interaction teaching animation were realized. These program development provide a strong technical support for the realization of virtual assembly animation.Finally, this paper integrated the function module to system framework by opening programming environment, and designed a user-friendly flexible operation interface. Then, the prototype of the virtual assembly system which taking shooting script as the core was finished. In addition, the details of this system were comprehensively explained by a real example of engine assembly models. An assembly animation solution was generated rapidly and efficiently by the system, is a strong support for the method of shooting script modeling technique and its related animation-driven technique, also proved the shooting script technique is feasible and practical in field of virtual assembly animation.
