The performance requirements such as function, practicality, safety and aesthetic aspects are involved in the design process of the products. Traditional product development must go through the design, prototype trial-production, and a revised design after testing and re-design, manufacturing process. Many unreasonable and error in the design will be found only in manufacturing and assembly process, or even in the stage of prototype trial-production. Consequently, the lead time is long and the cost is high. Therefore the traditional design method and process have been difficult to adapt to the highly competitive market requirement. With the rapid development of computer technology, digital pre-assembly technology is developed rapidly. In the product development process, the successful application of digital pre-assembly technology will help to shorten the lead time, reduce its cost, improve product performance and reliability, and enhance market competitiveness.In this paper, the method of the product assembly model in the design and manufacturing phase are studied in detail, and assembly information, expression strategy and the tree characteristics of assembly are discussed in the pre-assembly of digital information environment. An Open Assembly Modeling Method is presented on the basis of the work of previous studies. The geometric information reconstruction and data sharing have been realized in the whole of the product development process. Because assembly planning is core technology of the digital pre-assembly, we summarize the classification of assembly sequence planning, and make detailed description to the sequences generative pattern, the evaluation criteria and the optimization principle. Meanwhile, the linear monotone assembly sequence, the nonlinear monotone assembly sequence and the assembly re-directionality are proposed.Based on the analysis of the theories in the previous chapters, we applied open assembly model method to laser range finder product development. According to hierarchical division and structural analysis, the assembly association and characteristics between the artifact have been specified thoroughly, the assembly hierarchy is presented in the diagram form. In order to support the new products research and development, a database of this type of product has been established. By using interaction of CAD and VRML, the assembly model is generated in the virtual environment and the assembly sequence is built and optimized.
