With the rapid changes in communication technology and Internet business,communications infrastructure is facing more and more rigorous challenges. Developedcountries vigorously promote the upgrading of communications technology. With thetrilateral cooperation among the government, operators and customers, China’scommunications infrastructure has developed rapidly, but still has the very big margincomparing with developed countries. Especially the bandwidth of the fundamental datacommunication service and wireless network is much lower than that in the United States,Japan, Korea and other countries. Therefore, the fundamental communications capabilityneeds to be improved.As information grow pervasively and the rapid development of the infrastructure, theshortage of bandwidth of access network becomes the most important problem for theoperators and users. In the infrastructures construction how to change the network’s structureand adopt new communication technology are important problem to be solved urgently atpresent.This paper analyses the current situation of broadband access networks domestic andabroad, focusing on the EPON access technology. It gives a detailed introduction on theconcept of access network, how it works, and network model of EPON technology.Combining the work practices of the author, this paper discusses the selection of relevanttechnologies for EPON access network of the actual cell, equipment selection and otherrelated issues in depth.The content of this article is the author’s in-depth summarize in the process of workingpractice. Related techniques of broadband access network has matured, but the problems thatthe author considering deeply in the process of working practices are how to choose a matureand state-of-the-art technology, how to reduce the complexity of the network, how to reduceinfrastructure investment, how to increase the convenience of the subsequent expansion ofthe capacity and so on.The main work of this paper can be summarized as the following aspects:(1) Review the status of the access network technology and EPON access technology athome and abroad. On this basis, discusses the principle of EPON and networking model. This will lay the foundation for subsequent using EPON in the actual application.(2) Classify the customers by the present actual demand. The author analysed thecharacteristic by comparing EPON technology with traditional DSL, LAN access technologyin all aspects in view of the project implementation. We discussed the advantages of usingEPON technology in detail.(3) According to the actual cell engineering background, analyzing the effect of cellenvironment on EPON access network design, mainly including the security of accessnetwork, the reliability of the circuit, the diversity of the user’s business, the expansioncapability of basic network.(4) Network designing for the broadband access of the district based on EPON accesstechnology on fully argument premise.Analysing the difficulty in construction and solvingthe problems by giving a concrete solution. Budget and capital investments in the project areintroduced in detail. On basis of ensuring the funds, the author design a stable and reliableaccess network based on EPON technology as much as possible.The work of this paper can provide basis and practical experiences to other similardesign for access network.
