HCI (Human-Computer Interaction), originally referring to the interaction between human and computer, is extended to a wider concept of a mutualism between social stability and the explosive development of digital technology. Aiming for a more dominating competitive position in the market, both hardware manufacturers and software developers are focused on building up a tight bond between their products and the customers. As a result it’s becoming addictive that people experience mental discomfort, such as anxiety, when they are away from their portable devices for a certain time lapse. It is an alarming social crisis now, which will be analyzed from two perspectives in the first part of the article:personal digital devices encourage quick pleasure rather than our real needs to become determinative in people’s lives; excessive commercial profits can be eventually harmful for the whole business because of the corroding long-term human benefit. Through three potential solutions ("the internet of minds", multi-dimensional e-communicating and transformable device parts), this paper will present an answer to a question of how to utilize developing technology while not losing an integrated healthy society; finally I will explore the possibilities of positive societal effects of interaction design. |
