《Tiger Talk》——Four-dimensional Analysis On TV Debate Comments

Since the third plenary session of the social transformation, China has been speeding up the construction of democratic society where democratic deliberations and public discussions have been one of the vital signs of a democratic society. As regards the public participation in politic discussions, the media commentary bears irreplaceable responsibility. However, the status quo of China’s traditional commentary such as "single point of view" and "public opinion uniformity" is not consistent with the democratic discourse required by today’s society. Nowadays, the commentary in China should be in accordance with the current need of the democratic society. In other words, the commentary in China should combine the rules of social development, constantly reform and renew its type, form and style, and aims to better exert the social function of television commentary.In recent years, China’s TV talk show has been prosperously developed. Many TV stations, in succession, have initiated news commentary with various reporting styles. And the argumentative TV commentary has been one of the most active and influential programs. However, relevant theoretical studies towards the argumentative TV commentary, a kind of new emerging TV commentary, are far from significantly making progress in China. Most researchers at home view the argumentative TV commentary as a talk show, and explore its way of success only from the external perspective, putting no emphasis on the essence of commentary. As a result, the confusion of program division has been brought about, which will definitely affect the exploration of corresponding commentary rules.This thesis chooses " tiger talk" as its case study and aims to elaborate the theoretical essence of argumentative TV commentary in China. Altogether, this thesis is divided into three parts:first of all, this thesis makes the concept clear that the argumentative TV commentary is a kind of conversational TV commentary program, viewing "argumentation" as its external form; secondly, this thesis analyzes the inscape from the actual operational level, aiming to probe its operational rules and to provide some theoretical basis for other similar programs; finally, this thesis, from the social macro perspective, analyzes the social significance and function exerted by argumentative TV commentary. This thesis hopes to be able to correctly guide and direct the future argumentative TV commentaries, strengthening the role of TV commentary in constructing public discourses in a more adequate way.
