During the development of the office information system of the overall department, the system has different informationization environments in different phases due to thevariety of policies, financial conditions and technologies, etc, thus leading to thedifferences in the database management systems adopted by different sub-departmentsor even the same sub-department, and the unconformity between data structures, handling approaches and services scopes, etc.The original office information system is unable to furnish a common platform fordata integration and access and all the information management subsystems are isolatedfrom each other like “isolated islands” in the ocean. This costs many redundant effortsfrom the operators of the subsystems and also difficulties in the dataintercommunication between the subsystems. Besides, data cannot be shared, technicians find trouble in applying the existing data to conduct effective policyanalyses and there also are the high error rates; hence the need for a competentheterogeneous database system to manage the data of various databases. The presentthesis is a study of an integration program devoted to the heterogeneous data, which isdesigned to make possible the intercommunication and sharing between theheterogeneous data of the office informationization system through the integration ofvarious types of data into XML data. This paper makes an introduction to XML and middleware’s basics, featurescurrent status, extensive applications in data integration and advantages anddisadvantages. Targeting at the existing weaknesses of office informationization systemof the overall department, it makes a demand analyses of the integration system andproposes a heterogeneous data integration overall program with XML integrationmiddleware as the core by comparing the integration approaches to data of differenttypes. In addition, it touches upon the design of the middleware structure and thetransformation of the relationship mode into XML mode, the establishment of a publicmodel, and the design and functioning of the middleware’s research processor and resultprocessor. The paper makes possible the functioning of XML data integration’s middleware and the transformation of heterogeneous data into XML data respectivelywith the help of Java language and JDBC database access, which therefore successfullysettles the problems concerning information formats and exchanges, etc. Finally themiddleware of database integration is put into operation, solving the problems tointegrating the heterogeneous data of the office informationization system of the overalldepartment.
