With the growing popularity of the information technology and computer technology in modernsociety, especially the rapid development of Internet technology, a number of enterprises and researchinstitutes accumulated a large amount of heterogeneous data resources which caused informationislands. In order to make the sufficient use of these data resources, it is imperative to ensure datasharing and processing when integrating these heterogeneous data. Since the problem of informationislands can be solved by data integration technology, it’s meaningful to discuss the data integrationtechnology in detail.Considering the above mentioned problem, a design based on traditional heterogeneous dataintegration was proposed applying XML and middleware techniques. A unified information formatXML is used to exchange information between heterogeneous database systems. The XMLtechnology has a variety of advantages, including customization, scalability, convenience inexpressing different types of data, and solving the problem of unifying the data interfaces, which isbeneficial for information exchange and sharing between different databases. Data from differentapplications is converted into the unified framework of middleware, and the data analysis andprocessing of heterogeneous data are encapsulated completely, which is transparent to users. Therefore, the information resources could be efficiently utilized and the data could be shared in alarger range.A heterogeneous data integration strategy applying XML and middleware techniques was proposedbased on the analysis and improvement of tradition integration technique. In the meanwhile, it’s easyto operate on different platforms with the proposed integration system since the JAVA language iscross-platform and has portable. The system consists of the data layer, the middleware layer and theapplication layer, and the middleware layer is divided into different layers according to their differentfunctions with a unified interface for interaction, which not only makes understandability of thesystem stronger but also greatly enhances the system portability and maintainability.
