With its expanding application scope, virtual reality technology has beendeveloping rapidly in recent years, which, as a part of campus information system, isprevailing in realizing digital campus and making more contribution to the campusconstruction planning and distance education. Therefore, many universities research anddevelop the Virtual Campus system with the roaming function characterized by thedistinctive school features.As its popularity growing, the North China Institute of Science and Technology(NCIST) has become well known to the public, people tries to know more about NCIST.It is difficult for people to directly perceive the beautiful scenery and rich studyatmosphere of the campus through the webpage where displays only the introductorytexts and static pictures. Therefore, the technology of virtual reality and3D panoramictechnology development provide campus publicity with a new form of expression,enabling teachers, students and parents to appreciate the charm of the university withoutgoing out there.On the research of virtual reality (VRML) as well as the related technology, thispaper explores and develops the3DS MAX virtual campus roaming system in NCISTbased on the Microsoft Foundation Class (MFC) Visual C++. It makes an adequateanalysis of the campus’s demanding on the virtual roaming system according to theactual situation of the campus, working out the overall design plan and the functiondemand: to apply3DS MAX software for digital modeling the targets on campus, toapply VRPlatform software for rendering the models, to apply Visual C++software forthe realizing the interactive function between persons and scene.On achieving the real-time interactive tour and demonstrating the campus vividly,the system creates a truly immersive experience for those who have no chance to visitthe campus and strengthens the impression of the university.In a virtual branch campus system, users can demonstrate the multidimensionalcampus by operating the three-dimensional automatic roaming, roaming, manuallybuilding information display, demo panorama, real-time video, speech explaining, embedded webpage display, the integrated use of maps, text, sound, image and othermultimedia tools. Through tests, the system operates effectively as it’s designed.
