As a new generation of static image compression standard, JPEG2000has newperformances required in modern image compression. It supports good losslesscompression, good compression of low bit-depth imagery, scalability, and ROI codingand so on. Therefore it has a great variety of applications such as Internet, digitalcameras, wireless communication, medical imaging. However, the compression systemof JPEG2000is very complex and needs long coding time which is not fit for the highreal-time system. The purpose of this paper is to optimize some parameters from theview of the algorithm, thus to lower the resource used in this system on condition thatthe compression performance doesn’t descend much. So that this algorithm can berealized more easily by software or hardware.The main content of this article is as follows:First of all, by introducing the background of static image compression, the originof the standard JPEG2000and its characteristics, we realize the meaning of optimizingJPEG2000algorithm. In consideration of the system structure, the algorithm will bemodified in three main respects.After we analyze the ultimate principles of the Wavelet Transform module, theTier1coding module and the Tier2coding module, we successively optimize storagespace in these modules. Starting from9/7wavelet transform, this paper discusses theprecision problem of9/7lifting wavelet filter and proposes a method to determine theoptimum precision. Then it discusses how quantitative parameters influence the storagespace used in arithmetic coder during T1coding. Chapter5discusses and simplifies therate-distortion computation method in EBCOT algorithm, limits the storage space ofMSE and slope, and modified the scanning mode of the Eliminate Singular Pointfunction.The optimization result shows that our improved JPEG2000algorithm can reduceresource consumption while maintains high compression performance. It is suitable forsoftware and hardware implementation.
