my thesis reviewed the ever-changing history of the development of world publishing industry within a wide range of period covering thousands of years, I combed two primary cues based on the review of the publishing industry characterized by cultural and industrial nature. I have also attempted to present a Chinese publishing field which is highly autonomous while widely correlated with other sectors against the backdrop of political, economic, social settings. furthermore, I give a more sharp insight into the relationship between the higher education and the university presses, which can be precisely described as mutual constructive and articulated, I also apply the field theory as a mega-framework to analyze the correlated colleges and their affiliated presses to abstract two pairs of conception intertwined with each other: elitism culture and scholarly publishing; the culture field and contempary Chinese public intellectuals. by virtue of all of the theoretical analysis, I came down to the practical procedures:interviewing and surveying, my respondents covers50practitioners in university press sector, then I came to my conclusion:the process of system transformation in the sector of university presses is more formalist than substantive considering that the state ownership is still overarching at least, if not monopolistic, and the normative architecture of legal person governance is yet established, newly transformed firms are not so well placed to wield the market strategies due to lack of competence and multi-level restrictions; for the university presses in point, it is more urgently needed to improve their organization structuring and to learn the modernized management and marketing skills, rather than put the profit maximization goals on the top priority; editors working with university presses largely harbor a strong commitment to safeguard the cohesion and advancement of Chinese national culture, yet the lofty sense of mission is always undermined by comparatively low salary and social status as well as unsatisfactory scenario of autonomy, afflicting them with the dramatically career concussion in the transition from’honeymoon period’to’burnout period’to’disillusion period’. Meanwhile, the laissez-faire market-oriented institutional reform appears to constitute a sharp contrast ironically to the dedicated cultural sentiment embraced by those editors.
