Since its birth in the end of1960s, satellite communication has acquired a wide range of applications in military and civilian fields and become an irreplaceable method of communication. With the extension of application areas, there has been a various type of earth station for satellite communication, such as portable station, ship-borne station, vehicle station and others. With the development of the aviation and aerospace industry, the demand for airborne communication equipment has increased rapidly. The satellite communication is very suitable for airborne due to its advantage that includes coverage area, large capacity, long distance, flexibility, and reliable transmission line. This thesis discusses the overall design of earth station for airborne satellite communication. It includes the structure of the system, working band and star, communications standard, the structure of networking, and link calculation. The focus of the thesis is antenna system and servo control system. In the antenna system part, I discuss the principle of flat-panel antenna and give the realization. In the servo control part, I focus on the conical scanning and PID control method. In the end, I give the realization of some parts of the servo control system. Through this paper, a complete earth station for airborne satellite communication has begun to take shape.
