In recent years, with the implementation of the regional development strategy, people’s living standards have been rising, and domestic tourism has been booming. In the21st century, under the influence of the successful hosting of Beijing’s2008Olympic Games and the2010Shanghai World Expo, and driven by the formation of global economic integration and China’s sustained economic growth, China’s tourism will change a lot. The rise of tourism has greatly promoted the development of the guiding industry. Electronic guide system has become the tourism essential portable tool. In this paper, aiming at the range of services and QoS for audio guide system, a ZigBee-based audio guide system is proposed and implemented.Firstly, for the design of the whole system, a flexible and self-organizing audio guide system is designed with ZigBee wireless communication technology. This system can receive and forward the voice data packets from the guide by multi-hops, thus, increase the transmission distance effectively. Secondly, considering the lifetime issue of nodes in the audio guide system, an energy-balanced routing algorithm is proposed after the research on the ZigBee routing protocols. This algorithm can better avoid those nodes which have low residual energy or high transmission load, so that it can balance the energy of all nodes in the system as well as extend the survival time of the entire system. Thirdly, considering the quality of voice transmission, we improve it from the following two aspects:one is to analyze and compare existing voice compression coding algorithms to select the most suitable one for this system, the other is to propose a buffer delay algorithm based on node depth in the network according to E-Model voice quality prediction model. This algorithm can well adapt to changes of tourists’ node depth. Furthermore, the algorithm can appropriately adjust buffer delay and effectively eliminate voice jitter to get better voice quality. Finally, on the basis of the above study, system implementation issues are discussed. According to the functional requirements of the system, the appropriate hardware platform is selected for software and hardware design, and testing analysis have been done. Testing results show that communication distance and transmission quality in this paper has been greatly improved.In the end of this paper we also list the future work of the audio guide system needs to be done, point out the issues of audio guide system to be solved and improved, put forward some advice on expanding the application fields of this system, and lead to recommendations of improving for the follow-up system.
