For the complexity and variation of monitoring environment, it is urgent to introduce the rich-information media (e.g. audio, image, and video) into the monitoring applications based on sensor networks, and thus the fine environment monitoring can be performed. Towards this end, wireless multimedia sensor network (WMSN) becomes the research focus recently. This thesis emphasizes on the WMSN which has the audio-sensing ability. Specifically, we design and implement a kind of wireless audio sensor nodes, which can capture the real-time audio data. These audio sensor nodes are the foundation for many related environment monitoring applications.This thesis firstly introduces and analyzes the related technologies about WMSN, and then proposes a design scheme for the wireless audio sensor node by taking both of the hardware perspective and the software perspective into account. Our proposed scheme mainly consists of chips selection, circuit layout, and drivers design. Moreover, based on this kind of audio sensor nodes, we construct a ZigBee network and performed the audio collection. These experiments validate the usability of the wireless audio sensor node, and show that the wireless audio sensor network is feasible.
