The identity recognition and physical parameter collection of dairy cows is one of themost important problems in modern fine dairy cow breeding. Aiming at the problems ofinformation collection and transmission in dairy cow breeding, an overall design scheme ofinformation collection system based on wireless sensor network (WSN) has been put forward.According to the physical features of dairy cows, an information collection and transmissionproject has been made to decrease the data congestion in tree WSN. The embedded Linux andthe ZigBee technique have been used to develop the routing nodes in WSN so as to realizedata transmission and network extension.The main contents and results are as follows.(1) Based on the goal of the collection and transmission of dairy cow information, anoverall design scheme of the data collection system based on WSN has been made. Thescheme utilizes the characters of the WSN, e.g., lots of terminal nodes, low cost, wide spreadof the network, and suited to low-speed data transmission. Using the WSN, it collects thephysical data of dairy cows and transmits them to the data center. It also has the character ofeasy deployment and easy extension.(2) The problem of data congestion in tree WSN has been analyzed, and the schemebased on interval-acquisition data collection and store-and-forward data transmission hasbeen made, which not only decreases the quantity of data collection and transmission, butalso decreases the data congestion.(3) The procedure of the hardware design of expansion board and core plate for routingnodes has been used, which decreased the difficulty and period of hardware development.Using the TQ2440of the TianQian company as the core plate and the ZigBee of the WuxianLong company as the transceiver of routing nodes, the PCB of expansion board has beendesigned and made, and the hardware design of routing nodes has been completed. After thehardware test, it showed that the hardware of routing nodes had a good character ofreconfigurability and stability.(4) Based on the hardware design of routing nodes, the Bootloader, the Embedded Linux, and the Yaffs file system have been transplanted. Also, the virtual character device hasbeen defined which acts as the data table, and a driver is developed for the device. Accordingto the data transmission model, a data reduction program has been designed and developedwhich can reduces the node spending. After that, the ZigBee2006protocol stack for theZigBee part has been transplanted and the ZigBee protocol stack in application layer has beendesigned, and the function of the routing node is completed.(5) The hardware, software, and data transmission tests have been made indoor. Theresult showed that the routing node can be networked with other kinds of nodes by datacommunication.
