With the development of multimedia services, the demand for bandwidth isincreasingly urgent. Satellite communication is developing into broadband multimediasatellite communication which is the advanced multimedia application. As the keytechnology of B-ISDN (Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network), ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode) has a strong flexibility in resources allocation andguaranty of the high quality of service. The combination of ATM with satellitecommunication greatly enhances the capacity of satellite communication in networkingand supporting users’ multimedia services over wide areas. To promote broadbandmultimedia satellite communication based on the ATM switching, the problem how toaccess the IP network applied widely in the ground Internet network to satellite ATMswitching network has to be resolved.Based on the research project “Design and Implementation of Terrestrial AdaptingGateway and User System in Broadband Multimedia Satellite Communication System”,the Broadband Multimedia Satellite Communication System was studied. The meaningin the combination of ATM with satellite communication and the key point in theintergration of IP networks and ATM also were analyzed. Then, general framework ofthe Broadband Multimedia Satellite Communication System was researched, and thedesign requirements of signaling system was discussed. A set of interactivemultimedia-specific signaling and signaling processes were designed for IP/ATMintergration. Through the IP/ATM signaling/business adapting gateway, theestablishment and release of multimedia satellite communication links could beachieved, the sending and receiving signal procession in the IP/ATM adapting gateway,dynamic maintenance of conversion tables, and were described in detail.Finaly, it was shown by the completed debugging and testing work that thedesigned signaling system could work well and attain the design object. The design ofthe user terminal software system functioned well.
