The broadband multimedia satellite communication system is a natural extension of the terrestrial broadband network to the aerospace. As ATM technology featuring flexibility in resource allocation, supporting multimedia services and broadcast, and international standard, the combination of ATM's flexibility and QoS with the broad coverage of satellite communication greatly enhances the capacity of satellite communication in networking and supporting users'multimedia services over wide area.One of the key technologies of Satellite ATM (SATM) is onboard signaling processing, which can establish connections between users, access user data, allocate bandwidth and manage connections.Based on the research project"Broadband Multimedia Satellite Communication System", we study the principles and technologies of satellite communication systems and ATM networks, and probe into the design and implementation of the signaling system used on a SATM switch. The adaptation of services and translation of controlling protocols among heterogeneous networks are analized, and the specific flowchart of call access control is supplied. We provide a solution to the signaling software, describe in detail the function of its main modules, and discussed some problems met in implementation. It is shown by the completed debug and test works that the designed system realized principal functions of SATM signaling system, and attaining the design object.
