In recent years, with the development of multimedia services, we are increasing urgent demand for bandwidth. Satellite communication is developing into broadband multimedia satellite communication. As the key technology of B-ISDN (Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network), ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) has a strong flexibility and adaptability, and it can provide users with multimedia services, including voice, video, and data, etc. ATM can also allot resources as needed, in which way the resource utilization has been greatly improved. The combination of ATM with satellite communication greatly enhances the capacity of satellite communication in networking and supporting users’multimedia services over wide area. To achieve broadband multimedia satellite communication based on the satellite ATM switching, we have to resolve the problem how to make terrestrial networks work together with satellite ATM switching networks.Based on the research project "Design and Implementation of Terrestrial Adapting Gateway in Broadband Multimedia Satellite Communication System", after introduction and analysis broadband multimedia satellite communication and IP/ATM satellite communication technology, the design method of broadband multimedia satellite communication system based on satellite ATM switching is discussed in this thesis. And the hardware components and functional structures of the terrestrial adapting gateway are especially analyzed. Afterwards, the function and design of the FPGA modules of gateway are introduced. And then the FPGA implementation and timing simulation of some key modules, such as UTOPIA, Satellite ATM Interface, receiving treating module, queue management, are provided in this thesis. AAL5adaptation is implemented by Receiving treating module and queue management module. Finally, the development board of terrestrial adapting gateway is functionally tested by using relevant test equipment. And the board level test result is in line with timing simulation. So the result proves that the design has implemented the conversion of standard ATM cell and satellite ATM cell, the conversion of Ethernet frame and satellite ATM cell is also proved. As a whole, the design achieves the desired goals.
