Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consist of a large number of tiny, low-poweredsensors that communicate with each other through multihop wireless links formonitoring a field of interest. However, due to the great differences between WSNsand traditional wireless networks, traditional communication protocols cannot bedirectly applied to WSNs. Therefore, the development of specific communicationprotocols and measurement which is based on the characteristics and applications ofWSNs has become an important issue in WSNs.In this dissertation, we focuse on topology discovery algorithms and clusteringrouting algorithms in WSNs. Firstly, a topology discovery algorithm based on mobileagent is proposed to discover network topology in hierarchical topology. With theconsideration of mobile agent and the characteristics of hierarchical network topology, the migration strategy of mobile agents has also been improved. The algorithm can beeffectively used for data collection, periodic task allocation and network statusmonitoring. The network simulation platform is built in NS-2and simulation resultsshow that the topology discovery algorithm gets a better performance in expansibilityand convergency, and can reduce the transmission of redundant data andcommunication consumption, the results also show that the algorithm can extend thenetwork lifetime and be reference to routing protocol design in WSNs.Then, we propose an improved clustering routing algorithm NDEA (Node Degreeand Energy-Aware routing algorithm) based on LEACH (Low-Energy AdaptiveClustering Hierarchy). In this algorithm, a new weight is introduced to select clusterhead with residual energy and node degree. The simulation results show that theimproved algorithm NDEA can optimize clustering and balance network load. andgreatly improve the network lifetime. Finally, we conclude the paper and give some suggest for future works.
