The increasing sophistication of network infrastructures and, in particular, the introduction of broadband transmission and new network technologies together with advanced services that exhibit guaranteed Quality of Service characteristics, have necessitated the use of sophisticated management facilities. On the other hand, in increasingly large and complex, what's worse, constantly evolving networks, it is difficult to determine how the network is actually laid out, i.e. to discover the network topology on which network management is based. Yet this information is invaluable for network management and keeping track of network topology manually is a frustrating and often impossible job. So, it is critical time to research and develop a discoverer which can automatically discover and collect the information of network topology and it should exhibit guaranteed Quality of Service characteristics, i.e. should be Robust, Efficient, Fast, Complete, Accurate and Adaptive.This paper set out from the analyzing the essence and limitations of traditional network management framework i.e. OSI-SM and TCP/IP which both are Client/Server paradigm based on communication protocol, as such they are open to the challenge of new situation. After discussing the newest trends of network management and relevant technologies, the paper show a theoretical framework which indicate how these newest technologies can exploited in network management.Subsequently the paper examines the basic technologies of traditional algorithms to discover network topology all of which are protocol based approach, especially assume SNMP is deployed universally but actually not always in a real network. The disadvantages of traditional algorithms are plain. Then, the paper propose a new approach-RANTAD(Robust and Adaptive Network Topology Auto Discovery) which is process based approach and implemented with Microsoft Visual C++.
