With the rapid development of computer network, the appearance of various network technologies and its application in the network, network's structure is more complex and the client request of network service is higher, while the network provides advanced service. Therefore it is urgent to seek a kind of more flexible, more complex network management system. On the other hand, network management system is based on the network topology information and its importance is obvious. It is a common issue for those network institutes to research and develop a discoverer with completeness, robustness, accuracy and efficiency which can automatically discover and collect the information of network topology. Firstly, the paper analyzes the essence and deficiency of traditional network management, such as OSI, TCP/IP network management, then summarizes the new development tendency of network management. The paper also discusses how to use today's new technologies, such as CORBA and mobile agent technology, to meet the request of development through reforming traditional network management. On this basis, the paper builds a kind of multi-plat formed, protocol- irrelevant, intelligent, integrated network management framework, and gives its original model through conceiving the future structure of network management system. According to the network topology discovering algorithm's request of accuracy,high-speed capability and perfect capability, through SNMP,RIP,ICMP and broadcast technology in this paper, two broad area network topology discovering algorithms and two node discovering algorithms in two local-area networks are proposed. They realize and achieve optimization in the each addressing process,then obtain optimized path in the whole topology discovering process, so it can make up for the traditional algorithm's deficiency. The result indicates that this proposed algorithm can provide relatively accurate topology structure aiming at those different network circumstance. Finally above-mentioned algorithm's virtues are synthesized in this paper, and a kind of improved network topology automatic discovering algorithm-FANTAD is proposed. Depending on the TCP/IP network management system, this algorithm uses various existing protocols and discovering technologies to discover the network topology information robustly,perfectly and effectively.
