Chinese urbanization and urban internationalization are outstandingfeatures of Chinese current urban development. In recent years, withsustained and rapid development of Chinese economy, China plays a moreand more important role on the world stage, and the desire of Chineseurban international development becomes more intense. At present, manycities have put forward the developmental goal of internationalization, andsome cities, such as Shanghai, actively build cities’ international imagesthrough World Expo, city image propaganda films etc. The internationalpropagation of city image, as an important way to promote urbancompetitiveness, has gained more and more attention. However, now mostcities’international programs have not come up with innovative ideas.The paper mainly studies and discusses international propagationeffect of Chinese city image from two aspects. On the one hand, accordingto the relative theories of communication and document classification ofcity image researches, the paper conducts general studies on city image’sconnotation, communication channels, shortcomings and innovative paths.On the other hand, which is also the core part of the paper, based on survey data of “Shanghai City Image in International People’s Eyes”, the papercarries through qualitative and quantitative specific analysis of Shanghaicity image’s international propagation effect, and accordingly, probes intothe shortcomings of Chinese city image’s international propagation inorder to provide a reference for Chinese cities’internationalization.The paper proposes three suggestions for Chinese urban internationaldevelopment: Firstly, city construction needs historical heritage.Secondly,city management ought to combine rule of law with humanisticcare. Thirdly, urban culture and civil spirit require to be formed frombottom to top.
