Founded on a practical engineering project marine chart plotter, this paper makes athorough and deep research on the control system design and embedded system developmentwhich aims to increase the system performance. The marine chart plotter is an importantcomponent of modern marine integrated navigation system. The marine chart plotter, which isused togather with other navigation devices, receives navigation informations and plottinginstructions via the onboard local area network, and accomplishes plotting tasks under thecontrol of an embedded system. The marine chart plotter is a highly complicated device andconsists of multiple functional modules which are respectively responsible forcommunications digitalization, data computation and motor motion control. The marine chartplotter characterizes a very high plotting and digitalization accuracy, and rigid realtimeperformance. Therefore it is widely applied in modern marine navigation system.Several results are accomplished in this paper. Firstly, a general survey of the moderndevelopments of marine chart plotter are presented, and a concise review of fuzzy controlsystem analysis and design is made before the feasibility of this method is investigated.Secondly, a detailed description of the system function is given, and the fallacies of the oldsystem is analyzed and then the dynamic model of the control system is abstracted. Based onthis model, a fuzzy controller is designed. The controller constitues fuzzification, fuzzy rulesand defuzzification. Thirdly, a simulation with powerful tool MATLAB SIMULINK isperformed to validate the ability of the fuzzy controller applied to this control system. Thesimulation model consists of four part, each part corresponds to a functional part of the entiresystem. By analyzing the simulation results, the system dynamic performance is verified.Fourthly, the hardware improvement is given, which is designed as a Xilinx FPGA chip. AnVHDL file is compiled and tested by Xilinx ISE tools. This module functions as a frequencydivider and a step counter. Finally, the fuzzy system controller is implemented in Cprogramming language on a realtime platform of VxWorks realtime operating system.
