Access network technology is an important part of modern telecommunications network and becomes the focus of the current telecommunications technologies. Optical access network technology by virtue of the great advantages in bandwidth capacity and coverage distance has become the preferred solution for broadband access.Applications of optical access network in Xuzhou’s China Unicom are studied in this paper. Firstly, city broadband optical access which is divided into the backbone network and broadband access network is discussed. Base on analysis of some access methods used in Xuzhou’s broadband access network, some problems such as instability of the network quality of service, lack of the unified network management and routine maintenance difficulties are given. Fiber access network technology in subsequent construction and optimization is the best answer of these problems. Secondly, after discussion of the basic principles and characteristics of optical access network, the key technologies of passive optical networks such as EPON and GPON are studied. Finally, construction goal, construction mode and PON network of passive optical network in Xuzhou’s China Unicom are proposed. Analysis of a specific construction for a residential area show that optical fiber broadband access network using EPON and GPON technology will be the direction of development in Xuzhou’s China Unicom broadband access network.
