Side-polished fiber (SPF) is fiber optic components using optical fiber micro-processingtechnology to product it. SPF has been concerned because of its unique optical properties, lowcost and being able to make into all fiber optic components. And it also makes people searchnew research method for fiber-optic devices. With the development of cast fiber opticprocessing technology, SPF can be applied more and more widely.In this paper, all kinds of methods on Fiber side polishing and their advantages anddisadvantages of those methods are introduced firstly. Then performance requirements forsystem are proposed and a solution basing on wheel polishing method is designed. Especially,some problems in wheel polishing method are solved and the performance of wheel polishingmethod is improved. Thirdly, the functional modules are designed and achieved. Functionalmodule solutions are as follows. High-precision optical side polishing module solves the limitof polishing length. In this module, people can set up polishing length; Rotating optical fibermodule solves the problem that optical fiber polishing can not be multi-faceted; Fiberpolishing depth measurement module solves the problem that we can not control the depth ofpolishing; High-temperature arc of fire polished fiber optic module polishes the polishingsurface of optical fiber and reduces roughness of surface polishing; system control modulecontrols the whole system to work.In this system, STM32microcontroller and Stepping Motor Driver IC THB7128are usedto make sure this system work stably. Therefore, the SPF optic systems can be muchconvenient and easy to use, automated, user-friendly. Then I introduce STM32microcontroller and the software design of inferior machine lower computer. I also introducethe senior machine software based on Labview. STM32microcontroller and the softwaredesign of inferior machine lower computer will control all modules in this system and alsocontrol LCD display and achieve the communication with the senior machine. The seniormachine software will monitor the working status of the system and measure the diameter offiber, and achieve remote monitoring.Finally, a SPF optic system is made and used to do experiment for optical fiber side polishing and do many experiments for parameters of polishing fiber. Then the fibers afterpolishing are polished using High-temperature arc of fire polished fiber optic module. Newmethods to detect result of fire polishing are also put forward. A lot of experiments are doneto identify effects between mechanical polishing and fire polishing.
