In this paper, transmission characteristics of the side polished fiber (SPF) covered with different refractive index material were investigated experimentally. Measurements of were performed at different guiding light wavelengths, and different polishing depths. The experimental results obtained agree well with those from theoretical calculations. The transmission optical power (TOP) through the SPF will change with the variation of the refractive index of the covering material on the polishing site, as well as the guiding wavelength. We will study of change of polishing length of10mm or20mm, the loss of TOP didn’t appear greater when refractive index of covered liquid (RICL) from1.30to1.450. The loss of TOP appeared obvious greater when RICL from1.450to1.458. The loss of TOP appeared rapidly greater when RICL from1.458to1.462. The situation was not the same for polishing length of10mm or20mm when RICL greater than1.464. The loss of TOP for1310nm is smaller than that for1550nm, with the same SPF overlaid with the same refractive index liquid. TOP has a relationship with wavelength, when optical power and overlaid refractive index keep fixed.Optical transmission characteristics were studied with different polishing depth of SPF. Incremental relationships were observed for polishing length of10mm, whenever polishing region was covered with liquid or exposed in air. The same happened for SPF exposed to the air with polishing length of20mm. But when coverage of the refractive index of the liquid in the polishing area, the greater will be the loss of optical power didn’t appear when polishing depth increases. |
