Since China Daily launched its first edition in1981, it has passed30years. As thefirst national English newspaper in Chinese mainland, China Daily is also China’s onlyEnglish newspaper to have entered Western mainstream society. In recent years, it hasrevised several times. In March,2010, it experienced the large-scale changes from thecontent to the page layout, to cater to the new requirement in visual times and internettimes. It even redesigned its header this time.At the same time, in order to strengthen the visual effects and attract more readers,China Daily always attaches great importance to its front page and tries to make it as themost essential channel for visual appeal. During all the previous revisions, the front pagehas been changed most and greatly emphasized.This paper aims to conduct a comprehensive analysis on both the content and the pagelayout of the front page of China Daily by theoretical explanation and empirical research.It also points out its success and deficiency and provides useful reference and insights forother English newspapers in Chinese mainland.
