As a specialty of digital mobile communication system designed for railway, GSM-R can provide voice and data service for railway, and is the transmission plat roof of CTCS-3at the same time. GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), based on GSM-R network, is used to carry real-time railway data services, which require not very high security, so that the GSM-R system can make better use of radio resources, to avoid network congestion caused by sharp increase of circuit-switched services, and also develop new GSM-R railway services to speed up the development of railway information technology by using the features and advantages of GPRS.This article describes GSM-R system and GPRS networks and the network services provided by them, also the development history of GSM-R/GPRS network are summarized. The structure of GPRS network, communication mode and interaction information are analyzed. The communication processes of various key events about GPRS network are studied by analyzing these processes on Shi-Tai railway line. The requirements of the quality of GPRS services are introduced, and indicators which UDP transmission delay, Ping loop delay and UDP packet loss rate are tested by set up experiment environment, and all the indicators tested meet the requirements. In order to improve the reliability of the GPRS network, the redundancy mechanism and implementation of SGSN and GGSN equipments are given in this paper too.
