Network topology plays an important role in many fields such as networkconstruction, network maintenance, network security. Most of current topologymeasurement ways are based on traceroute. We can get IP level topology from theseways. But it can’t reflect the true connections between routers. One of the mostimportant issues in Internet topology measurement is the connections between routers. This thesis focuses on alias resolution in router’s level topology. Alias resolution is aprocess of identifying IP addresses which belong to the same router, and merging theseaddresses to one node.First we introduce the current study status and development trend in national andinternational. Then we describe the alias problem of routers. We introduce some formatsof probing messages in alias techniques which often be used. We also introduce theprinciple of traceroute and IGMP message. Then we analyze the influence of alias resolution to topological structure. Throughsimulating Internet topological structure, topology measurement and alias resolution, wequantify the impact of alias resolution on parameters of measuring topological structuresuch as topology size, node degree, degree distribution. We analyze the changing andchanging trend of network topology with different levels of alias resolution, differentnumbers of probing sources.Current alias resolution techniques can’t completely and truly resolve routers innetwork. This thesis puts forward a new alias resolution technique with IGMP message.Using mrinfo+we probe destination addresses with IGMP message. Destination addresssends a reply message to source when it receives the IGMP message. We can make alias resolution using the reply message. At last we compare the alias resolution results withcommon source address.
