Wireless sensor network is a new generation of intelligent integrated information network system, for its miniaturization, integration, multi-functional and systematic, networking, characteristic of the super low energy consumption system design, In military, environmental monitoring, industrial and agricultural production, traffic management, emergency rescue and disaster relief, medical and health, dangerous area remote control and many other areas have important scientific value and practical value.Because of their own characteristics, energy consumption in wireless sensor networks is one of the key research. Wireless sensor energy consumption is mainly used in data communication stage, so the routing protocol is very important to it. In the wireless sensor network in the development process there are many adapted to different background of the routing protocol is presented, in which the LEACH protocol is the has milepost sense protocol, this paper focuses on the energy consumption problem and improvement of LEACH protocol.In order to reduce the energy consumption of wireless sensor networks for research, firstly, the characteristics of the wireless sensor network, system structure, key technology, application background and briefly introduced, at the same time on some classical routing protocols for the comprehensive and detailed analysis, and then focuses on the LEACH protocol, including its operating principle, working process content, summarizes their advantages and disadvantages, proposed improvement, and experimental simulation. This improvement is mainly reflected in two aspects:the original LEACH protocol each round out the cluster head node may be due to residual energy shortage, can not be completed as cluster head during the task. We improved LEACH-M protocol in cluster head election threshold formula, the residual energy of the nodes, node does not become a cluster head running round number, consider, increase energy of nodes become cluster probability. At the same time node chooses cluster heads are added, into the node and cluster, cluster heads and base station factors such as weight factors, so as to form a cluster group distribution is more reasonable, to avoid a single node consume too much energy and death. The simulation results show that, the improved protocol can effectively provide nodes of survival rate, reduce the network energy consumption, prolong the network life.
