Sensor network, which is made by the convergence of sensor, wireless communication and networks technologies, is a novel technology about acquiring and processing information. Wireless sensor network (WSN) is a new area of computer science and communication technology, It is receiving increasing attention from all lines due to its wide application future. There are various kinds of application-specific routing protocols devised for wireless sensor networks by researchers around the world. The WSN is consisted of lots of micro sensor nodes. These nodes have definite energy and can't be replaced once they are disposed, so the energy is very important resource for the WSN which is related with the lifetime of the network. Saving energy is one primary goal during the study for WSN.Routing technique is the key technique of WSN and one of the most important factors affect the performance of the network. As the dynamic and variable topology, those traditional routing protocols can not be applicable to WSN and new routing protocol must be designed. In recent years, some special routing protocols for WSN appeared such as LEACH, PEGASIS,TEEN. Among them, LEACH is presented earlier and it is a self-organized,adaptive,energy-efficient,clustering network protocol. Which accounts for properties of WSN and prolongs the life-time of WSN efficiently via distributing the energy consuming to all the nodes. But the cluster heads selecting arithmetic in LEACH is not the best, because it dose not take the geographical position and the residual energy of the nodes into account. The dissertation studied WSN routing protocols detailed and analyzed the performance of LEACH in-depth. Then we made the improvement and presented the LEACH-CHO arithmetic according to the shortage of LEACH. The LEACH-CHO has a better performance on the lifetime of the network than LEACH through the simulation with NS-2.The content of the dissertation mainly including five parts as follows: In chapter one, we give a brief introduction to the concept, configuration, characteristic and applications of WSN. Then we analyze the characteristic and classing of routing technology. In chapter two, we introduced several typical protocols and compared their performance, advantages and disadvantages .In chapter three, according to the shortage of LEACH, we present the improvement--LEACH-CHO arithmetic. In chapter four, with NS-2, we compared the performance of LEACH and LEACH-CHO under the same environment. In chapter five is the last part of the dissertation, we draw a conclusion of the whole dissertation and made an expectation to further research and development of WSN routing technique.
